What is CE Marking?

Standards and Measurements

Several years ago, the European Community (EC) issued various directives that govern the passage and sale of the products sold into and exported out of its member nations. These directives are laws in the EC that set minimum acceptable limits for product performance. Compliance with these laws was made mandatory January 1, 1997. Products which bear the CE Mark have been shown to comply with one or more of the relevant (based upon product definition) standards. The following two directives, along with the CE Marking Directive have been applied to the majority of Compumotor's product offering.

LVD

The Low Voltage Directive (LVD) ensures the safety of persons or property when operating the product.

• Protection against hazards such as electrical shock, mechanical hazards, vibration, fire, and heat.
• Protection of equipment from hazards such as over current and over temperature.
• Grounding methods and wiring practices.
• Applied to products operating between:
• 50-1000 volts Alternating Current (AC)
• 75-1500 volts Direct Current (DC)

EMC

The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive governs electrical noise emissions and susceptibility, ensuring that electrical and electronic systems may work together as intended.

• Radiated Emission (Radio Frequency)
• Conducted Emissions (Power Line propagated disturbances)
• Electrostatic Discharge Immunity
• Electrical Fast Transient Immunity
• Power Line Disturbance Immunity
• Magnetic Field Immunity
• Radiated Immunity

If the apparatus fails within the scope of the directive, compliance is mandatory. However, the applicability of the directives is open to interpretation by both the manufacturers and end users, often leading to confusion. A product may bear the CE Mark for compliance with the Low Voltage Directive, while not intrinsically meeting the EMC Directive. Therefore, special attention should be used when selecting products to meet the EMC Directive. When Compumotor issues a CE Mark on a product, we state which specific directives it meets. If the specific product does not directly comply we the entire EMC Directive, we provide instructions on additional installation measures that must be taken.

Identifying CE-Marked Products in Catalog

Throughout this catalog, products that have met the right to bear the CE Mark (refer to the following list) will display one of the following notations:

• CE (LVD) Product complies with the CE Low-Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC).
• CE (EMC & LVD) Product complies with the Electromagnetic Directive (89/336/EEC) and the Low-Voltage Directive (73/23/EEC).
